From 20×30 to 80×100 cm: how to pick the right cross stitch kit size based on your photo, your experience and the time you want to spend.
Cross stitch kits at Stitchi Studio come in 22 sizes, from 20×30 to 80×100 cm. The right size depends on three things: what's in your photo, how much experience you have and how much time you want to spend. The rule of thumb: the more faces or detail, the bigger the size — and for most people 40×60 cm (€47.95) is the sweet spot. Here's the honest guide.
A small size is the smartest start if you've never stitched before — or not in a long while. The project stays manageable, you see results quickly and the odds of actually finishing are much higher. Small sizes work best with one clear subject: one face, one pet, one building. We'd advise against group photos at this size — faces become too small to stay recognisable. Not sure your photo is suitable? Check the 8 quality checks for a suitable photo.
The middle segment is popular for a reason: enough room for facial detail, without signing up for a year-long project. 40×60 cm (€47.95) is the most chosen size for a custom photo cross stitch kit — suitable for portraits of one to a few people or pets. It's also the largest size available as a counted-pattern variant.
You choose a large size for two situations: a group photo (family, generations, wedding party) where every face needs room, or an eye-catcher for the wall. Do count on a serious project: more surface means more stitches and more hours. How many exactly? Read the realistic time estimate per size before you decide.
The full table with all 22 sizes and current prices (€29.95–€99.95) is in the complete price guide. Still weighing pre-printed versus counted? There's a separate guide to counted cross stitch.
40×60 cm (€47.95): big enough for recognisable faces, manageable as a project.
20×30 cm, at €29.95 for a complete kit.
From 40×60 cm — and with four or more people, better 50×70 cm or larger. Every face needs room to stay recognisable.
Six sizes: 20×30, 30×30, 30×40, 40×40, 40×50 and 40×60 cm — at the same price as the pre-printed variant.
You can, but we don't recommend it as a first project. Start small or go medium — a finished small project motivates far more than half a large one.
