Mosaic vs. diamond painting: which one suits you?

by Stitchi Studio 08 Sep 2026 0 comments

Mosaic and diamond painting look similar — with both you place tiles on a grid — but they feel and look completely different: with a mosaic you build up your photo using coloured mosaic tiles on transparent base plates, giving you a matte, artistic look; with diamond painting you stick tiny sparkling "diamonds" onto a pre-printed adhesive canvas, giving you a shimmering image that glints in the light. Which one suits you depends on the feeling you're after and the end result you want on your wall. Below we lay it all out honestly, side by side.

In short: where's the difference?

The technique looks related: in both cases you follow a numbered grid and lay down an image tile by tile. Yet they are two different hobbies. With a mosaic of your own photo you work with real coloured mosaic tiles that you place on transparent base plates with a numbered grid — you build your image up. With diamond painting you work with small round or square resin "diamonds" that you press onto an adhesive canvas with a glue layer — you stick your image down. In the end, the material and the surface determine how your work feels and how it looks.

How a mosaic works: tiles on transparent base plates

With mosaic art you upload a photo, after which we convert it into a personal pixel design. Your package contains the coloured mosaic tiles in exactly the colours your design needs, two transparent base plates with a numbered grid, clear building instructions, a pair of tweezers and fixing material. You pick up a tile with the tweezers, find the matching square in the grid and place it. Square by square, you watch your photo appear. No paint, no needle, no thread — and no painting or drawing talent required. Want to know exactly how to start? Read our beginner's guide, or discover in what photo mosaic art actually is.

If you choose a larger size, you combine several base plates for more detail — handy if your photo contains lots of faces or fine elements. To find out which photo works best, read which photo is suitable for a mosaic.

How diamond painting works: diamonds on adhesive canvas

With diamond painting you get a canvas with a pre-printed symbol grid and a glue layer under a protective film. You peel back a piece of film, tap an applicator pen (with a bit of wax in the tip) onto a diamond and press it onto the right symbol. Because you're working on an adhesive surface, the diamonds stay put by themselves. The diamonds have facets that reflect the light, which makes the finished piece sparkle. It's a pleasant, repetitive activity that many people find wonderfully meditative.

The feeling: building versus sticking

The biggest difference is in the experience. A mosaic feels like building: you place tangible tiles on an open grid and watch your image literally emerge in relief. Diamond painting feels like sticking: a smooth, rhythmic motion of picking up and pressing down, where the sparkling result feels instantly rewarding. Both are calming and mindful — it mainly comes down to which rhythm gives you the most relaxation.

The end result: matte and artistic versus sparkling

On the wall you see the difference straight away. A mosaic has a matte, richly textured look reminiscent of a real work of art — ideal if you're after something timeless for a calm, warm interior. Diamond painting stands out precisely because of its sparkle: with every bit of light the image glitters. If you want a shimmering eye-catcher, that's a plus; if you're looking for a subtle, handcrafted portrait of a treasured memory, a mosaic comes into its own.

Price, sizes and shipping

A mosaic of your own photo costs between €49.95 and €207.95, depending on the size — from 25×25 cm up to 40×80 cm. Larger sizes are built up from several base plates, which gives more detail. Shipping is free, worldwide and with no minimum order. You'll find a complete overview of all sizes and what's in the package in a mosaic of your own photo: prices & sizes. Diamond painting prices vary widely by size and supplier, so they're hard to compare one to one.

Which one suits you?

In short: choose a mosaic if you want a personal image of your own photo with a matte, artistic look and the satisfying feeling of building it up. Choose diamond painting if you love shine and a repetitive technique. Still torn between a mosaic and our other creative lines? In mosaic, color by numbers or cross stitch we compare all three. Frequently asked questions

Is mosaic art the same as diamond painting?

No. The technique looks like it — with both you follow a numbered grid — but with a mosaic you place coloured mosaic tiles on transparent base plates, while with diamond painting you press sparkling resin diamonds onto an adhesive canvas. The feeling (building versus sticking) and the end result (matte versus sparkling) therefore differ clearly.

What's easier for beginners?

Both are very accessible and require no drawing or painting talent. With a mosaic you calmly work from top to bottom with tweezers; with diamond painting you pick up diamonds with an applicator pen. If you want to start with a mosaic, our beginner's guide will help you get going.

Can I make a mosaic from my own photo?

Yes. At Stitchi Studio every mosaic is always based on your own photo: we convert it into a personal pixel design with the right coloured tiles. Some diamond painting shops also offer a photo option, but our line is entirely focused on your personal photo.

Does a mosaic sparkle too, like diamond painting?

No. A mosaic has a deliberately matte, richly textured and artistic look. Diamond painting is intentionally sparkling thanks to the facets of the diamonds. That's the main visual difference: are you going for sparkle, or for a timeless, handcrafted image?

How much does a mosaic of your own photo cost?

A mosaic costs between €49.95 (25×25 cm) and €207.95 (40×80 cm), depending on the size. Shipping is free and worldwide, with no minimum order. You'll find all sizes and prices in our prices and sizes overview.

How long does a mosaic take?

That depends on the size. Just like diamond painting, it's a project you spread over several evenings. Many makers find that a plus: there's no need to rush, and every session you see your photo come a little more to life.
