Which photo is suitable for embroidery? 8 Quality Checkpoints
The biggest disappointment with an embroidered portrait almost always comes from the source photo, not the embroidery itself. A blurry, poorly lit, or too-small photo translates illegibly — and 60 hours of handiwork can't be saved with a better photo after the fact.
This guide will help you pre-assess whether your photo will work. Eight concrete checkpoints — go through them, and you'll know if the answer is yes or no, even without a preview.
Why Photo Quality Determines Everything
Cross-stitch works with flat, block-like color areas — each pixel becomes a colored stitch. Unlike a photo print, nothing can be polished afterward: if the eye is blurry, the eye remains blurry.
1. Sharpness in the Face
If the face in the photo is blurry, it will turn into an unrecognizable collection of color blocks in cross-stitch. Zoom in on the photo on the screen — can you clearly see the eyes? Eyebrows? Hairline? Then it works.
Rule of thumb: if you zoom to 200% and details are still sharp, the photo is sharp enough.
2. Light on the Face
Soft, even lighting works best:
- Golden hour light outdoors (first hour after sunrise, last before sunset)
- Soft afternoon sun with shade (e.g., under a tree)
- Window light indoors
- Cloudy day outdoors (natural softbox)
- Avoid: harsh midday sun, flash photos, yellow or blue artificial light indoors
3. Calm Background
The background becomes part of the portrait. A single-colored wall, nature, or against the sky works best. Avoid:
- Other people in the background
- Colorful advertisements or signs
- Complex patterns (wallpaper, busy tiles)
- Strong light spots
4. Resolution of at Least 2000 px
The original file from a modern mobile phone is sufficient (5000–12000 px). What does NOT work:
- Screenshots from Instagram or TikTok
- WhatsApp forwards
- Photos from Facebook Messenger
Tip: Request the photo directly via email or AirDrop. For wedding photos: request the RAW file from the photographer.
5. Aspect Ratio Matches Desired Size
A landscape photo on a portrait-oriented canvas will not work without loss:
- Portrait orientation: 3:4 or 2:3 — works on 30×40 or 40×60
- Square: 30×30 or 40×40
- Landscape orientation: 4:3 or 3:2 — works on 40×30 or 40×50 (landscape)
6. Number of People in the Photo
- 1 person: works from 20×30
- 2 people: at least 30×40
- 3–5 people: at least 40×50 or 40×60
- 6+ people: 50×70 or two separate portraits

7. Color Palette: Rich or Limited
- Rich colors (outdoors in nature, colorful clothing) — vibrant, illustrated result
- Limited palette (studio, monochromatic) — classic, portrait painting effect
- Black and white — works great, fewer thread colors needed
8. Emotional Significance of the Moment
The most underestimated check: how emotionally important is this specific moment? An embroidered portrait gains sentimental status through the time invested in it — combine that with a meaningful photo and the gift becomes irreplaceable.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I have an older photo (80s/90s) embroidered?
Yes — older photos often embroider beautifully. Scan at a minimum of 600 DPI.
What if my photo doesn't meet all 8 points?
As long as the sharpness, light, background, and resolution are good, something beautiful can usually be made from it.
Can the photo be edited?
Yes, removing or adjusting the background is possible. Note this when ordering.
What if I have several good photos?
Upload 2 or 3 — you will receive previews of all within 24 hours.
How sharp does a baby or child photo need to be?
With children, there's a bit more leeway — their faces naturally have softer lines.
