Embroidering The Threatened Swan: Recreating Asselijn's Masterpiece

by StitchiStudio 18 Aug 2026

TL;DR: You can create Jan Asselijn's The Threatened Swan yourself as a pre-printed cross-stitch kit or as a Paint by Numbers kit. A dramatic, impressive eye-catcher.

About the painting

Around 1650, Jan Asselijn painted a white swan with spread wings, hissing, defending her nest against a dog in the water. It was later seen as a symbol for the Dutch statesman Johan de Witt who protected 'the people'. It hangs in the Rijksmuseum and, due to its size and drama, is one of the most impressive animal pieces of the Golden Age.

Option 1: Embroidering The Threatened Swan (cross-stitch)

The cross-stitch kit is pre-printed on 11CT canvas, so no counting is needed. The radiant white of the swan against the dark sky creates a strong contrast and a lot of volume; with subtle grey and cream tones, you embroider the feathers full of movement. Complete with premium eco-cotton thread, needles, and a Dutch manual.

Option 2: The Threatened Swan as Paint by Numbers

With Paint by Numbers, you paint the swan section by section with numbered markers on premium canvas, without experience. Choose 24, 36, or 48 colors.

Embroidery or painting — what suits you?

  • Cross-stitch for the tranquility and texture of real craftsmanship.
  • Paint by Numbers for quick results without experience.
