About this design
★★★★★ Israëls' Moving 'Children of the Sea' — Stitch by Stitch
Jozef Israëls' Children of the Sea: two fishermen's children on the beach, gazing at the waves. A moving highlight of the Hague School, full of understated atmosphere and soft coastal light.
Why this cross-stitch kit?
Warm sand tones, deep dark blue clothing, and the soft grey sea form a calm, harmonious palette. The large areas make it accessible, while the atmosphere invites you to lose yourself in it.
Who is this embroidery kit for?
An atmospheric gift for lovers of the Hague School and coastal art. Also a rewarding project for yourself.
What's in this cross-stitch kit?
- Pre-printed 11CT embroidery canvas — symbols and color numbers are already on the canvas, so no counting needed
- Premium eco-cotton thread (Huacan) — stronger and more colorfast than standard thread, less prone to breaking
- Two gold-plated cross-stitch needles in a handy protective case
- Step-by-step instructions in Dutch, also suitable for beginners
- Printed symbol chart for reference during embroidery
Which size is right for me?
The smallest size (20×30 cm) is a nice weekend project; our most popular size 40×50 cm looks beautiful above a dresser or in the hallway. Larger sizes (from 60×80 cm) become impressive eye-catchers. Under Type, choose Pre-printed Canvas (complete kit) or Counted Cross Stitch Pattern if you prefer to work with a counted pattern on blank fabric.

Pre-printed: The symbols and colours are on the fabric. You can see straight away where each stitch goes and work your way through colour by colour.
Counted pattern: You stitch on blank fabric and follow the pattern supplied. A traditional way of cross stitching that takes a little more focus. The counted pattern comes in fewer sizes.
Fabric: 11CT as standard (11 stitches per 2.54 cm). With the upgrade to 14CT, the stitches are smaller and you see more detail.
I’ve never done embroidery before. Will I manage?
Yes. Just choose pre-printed: the symbols and colours are already on the fabric, so there’s no counting. The instructions (in Dutch) explain step by step how to make a cross stitch.
What’s the difference between 11CT and 14CT?
CT stands for the number of stitches per 2.54 cm. 11CT is standard: larger stitches, easy to see. On 14CT the stitches are smaller, so you see more detail in things like faces and fur.
When will my kit arrive?
We make your kit in 5–7 working days, then it’s with you in 2–4 working days. Shipping is always free, with tracking.
You can pay securely with iDEAL, Klarna, Bancontact, Visa, Mastercard or PayPal.
Can I return it?
You have a 14-day cooling-off period. During that time, you can send the kit back in its original condition.
We’ll always put it right. Something damaged or missing, or did we make a mistake? Email a photo to info@stitchistudio.com.
Can I give it as a gift?
Of course. At checkout, enter the recipient’s address.
What are the instructions like?
Every kit includes step-by-step instructions in Dutch: how to read the symbols, make your first cross stitch and start and finish neatly.

How do I wash my embroidery?
- Hand wash your embroidery in lukewarm water (30 °C max.) with a little mild soap.
- Don’t wring: press the water out between two towels.
- Leave it to dry flat, out of direct sunlight.
- Iron the back, on a soft towel, to keep the stitches nice and plump.
