Embroider a dog from a photo: how to create a lasting portrait

by StitchiStudio 31 May 2026

Embroidering your dog from a photo means having a favorite picture of your dog transformed into a complete cross-stitch kit: fabric, thread, needles, and pattern. At StitchiStudio, we do this by hand from the Netherlands — ensuring that the shape of the snout, the sparkle in the eyes, and the color of the fur are truly accurate. Starting from €34.95, delivered within 4–10 days.

Why embroidering your dog creates a lasting portrait

A photo disappears into your phone. An embroidered dog portrait hangs on the wall, catches the light, and carries every stitch you put into it. It’s a hobby and a memory at the same time — and that's precisely why dog and cat owners so often choose a custom-photo kit.

Moreover, embroidering is a peaceful activity. For many dog owners who want to create something with their hands — instead of another hour of scrolling — it’s the perfect way to unwind. Mindful embroidery explains why cross-stitching is so calming.

What makes a photo of your dog suitable?

Not every snapshot makes a beautiful embroidery. A good source photo is:

  • Sharp and at eye level — get down on your knees to capture their gaze.
  • Bright daylight, preferably soft shadows — no harsh midday sun.
  • Clear shape against a calm background — grass, wood, a plain wall.
  • Full head or half body — not too far away, ears and eyes recognizable.

Unsure about your photo? Feel free to send two. Together, we’ll choose the version that retains the most character in cross-stitch.

Which size is suitable for a dog?

The right size depends on two things: how detailed your dog is (a Shih Tzu requires more stitches than a Labrador) and how much time you want to spend.

  • 30×40 cm — quick, recognizable, ideal for a first custom-photo project.
  • 40×50 cm — our most popular size for dogs, with room for fur and eye details.
  • 50×70 cm and larger — portrait level, you'll even see nose folds.

How does it work at StitchiStudio?

The steps are deliberately simple:

  1. You order the Custom Photo Embroidery Kit and upload your photo.
  2. We hand-design a cross-stitch pattern, optimize contrast and fur color, and assemble the thread palette.
  3. You receive a complete kit at home: custom-cut Aida fabric, DMC thread sorted by symbol, two needles, the pattern with color chart, and Dutch instructions.
  4. You don't need to buy anything extra.

Prefer just the pattern (PDF) because you already have your materials? That's also possible — read how we turn a photo into an embroidery pattern.

Tips especially for dog portraits

Fur is the trickiest part. A few things we consider in our design, and that you can remember yourself:

  • Dark dogs get extra contrast threads (often warm brown through black) so the fur doesn't become one solid block.
  • White dogs need many soft gray tones — pure white is rare in real fur.
  • The eyes are embroidered last — only then do you see how much light to put into the whites of the eyes.
  • Nose and mouth often only need a few stitches to recapture the likeness.

It's no wonder customers rate us an average of 4.9/5 stars across 1,247 embroideries. The likeness primarily comes from the thread selection — and that's where we spend most of our time.

A dog portrait as a gift

An embroidered portrait works extra well as a gift for:

  • The arrival of a puppy.
  • A birthday of a true dog lover.
  • A farewell — peaceful, personal, lasting. We wrote a separate article about it: embroidery in memory.

FAQ

Can I have my dog embroidered from a phone photo?

Yes, as long as the photo is sharp and your dog is clearly visible. A modern phone photo taken in daylight is more than sufficient.

How long does it take to create a dog portrait in cross-stitch?

For 30×40 cm, count on 25–45 hours; for 40×50 cm, 45–75 hours. An experienced embroiderer works faster. See our time estimate per size.

Can a two-dog photo also be used?

Certainly. In that case, choose at least 40×50 cm, as two heads require more space to remain recognizable.

What if my dog has a mixed coat?

Precisely then, embroidery surpasses photo printing: we blend multiple color tones, making the fur appear alive.

Do I get everything I need?

Yes — custom-cut Aida fabric, thread sorted by symbol, two needles, pattern with color chart, and Dutch instructions. Nothing extra to buy.
