Not every photo works well in cross stitch. These 8 quality checkpoints show you upfront whether your photo will translate — before you order anything.
The biggest disappointment with a custom photo cross stitch almost always comes from the source photo, not the stitching itself. A blurry, poorly lit or too-small photo translates unrecognizably to cross stitch — and 60 hours of handwork can't be saved by a better photo afterwards.
This guide helps you judge upfront whether your photo will work. Eight concrete checkpoints — run through them, and you'll know without a preview whether the answer is yes or no.
Cross stitch works with flat, block-like color areas — each pixel becomes a colored stitch. Unlike a photo print nothing can be polished later: if the eye is blurry, the eye stays blurry. If the light casts harsh shadows, those shadows stay visible.
Good upfront photo selection prevents disappointment — it also determines whether the 60+ hour gift stays on the wall or ends up in a drawer.
If the face is blurry or out of focus, it becomes an unrecognizable cluster of color blocks in cross stitch. Zoom into the photo on your screen — can you clearly see the eyes? Eyebrows? Hairline? Then it works.
Rule of thumb: if you zoom to 200% and details are still sharp, the photo is sharp enough. Instagram photos are often sharp at small size but blur as they enlarge.
Soft, even lighting works best. Ideal, best to worst:
The background becomes part of the stitched portrait. Plain wall, nature, or against the sky works best. Avoid:
The original file from a modern phone or camera is usually more than enough (5000–12000 px). What does NOT work:
Tip: request the photo via email or AirDrop — that preserves original resolution. For wedding photos: ask your photographer for the RAW file.
A landscape photo on a portrait canvas won't work without cropping. Think ahead about desired size and check if your photo ratio matches:
More people = more color blocks competing for space. Ideal:

Cross stitch handles both well, but it defines the character of the final result:
There's no "best" choice — it depends on the character you want.
The most underrated check: how emotionally important is this specific moment? A stitched portrait acquires sentimental status through the time in it — combine that with a meaningful photo and the gift becomes irreplaceable.
No good recent photo? Consider a throwback photo (5–10 years old). Cross stitch actually makes older photos look better: yellow-tinted retro colors translate beautifully.
With our Custom Photo Cross Stitch Kit you get a preview in 4 stages within 24 hours — you see exactly how your photo translates before paying anything. Not sure? Just upload: only when the preview satisfies does the kit go into production.
| Check | Yes | No |
|---|---|---|
| Face sharp at 200% zoom? | Continue | Find another photo |
| Soft/even light on face? | Continue | Find another photo |
| Calm background? | Continue | Consider cropping |
| Original file (no screenshot)? | Continue | Get original |
| Ratio matches desired size? | Done | Pick another format |
Yes — older photos often stitch beautifully, because the characteristic colors of that time (warm, soft) translate well. Make sure the scan has high resolution; for old paper photos: scan at minimum 600 DPI.
As long as the first four (sharpness, light, background, resolution) are in order, something beautiful is usually possible. The last four are optimizations, not dealbreakers.
Yes, background removal or adjustment is possible — note this at your order. Some customers choose to replace the original background with a plain color.
Upload 2 or 3 — you get previews of all within 24 hours and can pick after. Costs nothing until you order.
With children you can allow slightly more latitude — their faces naturally have softer lines. As long as the eyes are clearly visible and the expression is recognizable, it works.
Upload your photo risk-free and get a preview within 24 hours. You'll see exactly how the translation looks — only when satisfied does the kit go into production.
