That newborn shot, the six-week smile, or the first birthday portrait — stitched, it becomes a gift that stays on the wall. Here's how to make one.
In your baby's first year you take thousands of photos. Newborn hours old in the hospital, cheek-to-cheek with grandma, first time sitting up. Most of them you won't look at again after six months — they disappear into the photo app.
A hand-stitched baby photo is different. Not because it's a better representation, but because it represents 40+ hours of handwork and literally hangs on the wall. This guide covers how to turn that one special photo moment into cross stitch: which photos work, which size fits, and when to give it.
Photo prints of your baby are quick: upload, order, done. Practical and affordable — and after two years there's usually a newer version in its place. The first-birthday print moves into a drawer.
A stitched portrait works differently. Handwork acquires sentimental status: it can't be replaced by a newer version because someone's time is in it. For parents who receive it from family (mother-in-law who stitched for 60 hours), the emotional weight is literally tangible. For those stitching it themselves during pregnancy or the early months, it works the other way around: the process itself becomes part of the memory.
The wrinkly first-days photo is emotionally the most loaded, but visually the most challenging. Often slightly blurry, yellow hospital lighting, wrinkled skin. Works if you have a well-lit shot (like right after coming home, near a window). Choose a larger format (40×60) so the face gets room.
Professional newborn shoots are ideal material: calm background, even lighting, high resolution. Parents often already have a handful of picks from the photographer — choose the one where the face is sharpest and frontal.
Emotionally often one of the most precious moments. Photos from this phase are usually informal (on the play mat, in the high chair) — make sure the background isn't too busy. A plain wall or blanket behind baby works better than toys or morning newspaper.
Classic "photoshoot on a random day" version: baby upright, showing personality. Works really well because baby has more distinct character by then — recognizable in stitch, whereas early newborn photos can look "generic baby".
The party photo with cake on face is charming but visually busy. Rather pick a portrait from the same day — outside, in the garden, against the sky. That birthday as a marker makes the gift particularly fitting.

Baby portraits look best in vertical formats:
More on timing? Read how long a cross stitch really takes.
You won't stitch 80 hours in 4 weeks, we know. But: give a card at the baby shower saying "you'll get a stitched portrait as soon as you've picked a favorite photo" — that's a gift in itself. Parents then choose which photo becomes it.
Traditional gift moment, ceremonial character, and usually a planned photoshoot before or after. Perfect timing: you have weeks of lead time and can stitch during that period.
Emotional pivot moment — end of the baby year. A stitched portrait at this milestone becomes a year-after-year reference point on the wall.
Grandparents are often the proudest recipients — a stitched portrait of their own grandchild, in their own home, is emotionally the opposite of a photo frame with the same print. See also our baby cross stitch gift ideas.
Almost all baby portraits are personalized with name and birthdate — often also weight and length. That turns it into a complete stitched birth announcement. Where the text fits best (under the photo, on a ribbon, or along the side) depends on photo composition.
For stillbirths, premature babies who didn't make it, or NICU babies still hospitalized: a stitched portrait from the photo that does exist (even an ultrasound scan works) is one of the rare gifts that fits that situation. See our memorial cross stitch guide — the same principle applies.
Yes — pick 40×50 or 40×60 minimum so both faces get enough room. A photo with both babies together works better than pasting two separate photos side by side.
Yes — ultrasounds stitch well because they already consist of grayscale values. The result is subtle and recognizable. Often as a companion piece next to a "post-birth" portrait in the same style.
Within 24 hours of upload you'll see how your photo translates to cross stitch. Only after approval does the kit go into production.
Yes, all Latin-script text works — names and text in English, German, Dutch, etc. all translate.
DMC has a wide range of skin tones — from very pale to deep. Every skin color translates well in the preview so you can see beforehand whether it works.
Upload the baby photo risk-free and get a preview within 24 hours. No purchase required — only when you love the portrait does the kit go into production.
